2. Accountability (Defining Human Oversight): If the AI makes a harmful or questionable recommendation (e.g., flagging a student for behavioral intervention), who has the final say, and who is responsible for the error? The human educator must always retain agency over the final decision.

3. Transparency (Understanding the Mechanics): Can the vendor explain, in plain language, which data features influence the AI's recommendations? Tools that are complete "black boxes" must be approached with extreme caution, as bias cannot be audited or corrected if its mechanism is hidden.

Actionable Steps for Educators

Teachers are the first line of defense against algorithmic bias. You must be trained to.

  • Contextualize AI Output: Never accept an AI recommendation at face value. Always apply critical human judgment, context, and knowledge of the individual student before acting on AI advice.
